Hello, the document is in French. Would there be an English version available, for non-French speakers ?

That error was due to a bad file name, however it would've been nice to get a "latex/imagemagick does not exist" error instead of the misleading "png not found" :)

The real problem: the latex folder has spaces in its name, and pidgin-latex is breaking it up as if they were *parameters*.

I worked around it by having a batch file in a folder whose path has no spaces, redirecting pidgin-latex to the proper folder. The BAT file looks like this:

"C:\Programs\MiKTeX 2.7\miktex\bin\latex" %*

Unfortunately the quotes don't seem to work if applied directly in the plugin's configuration. Looking through your code, it seems like you're parsing the parameters (and spaces) manually and spawning the process yourself. You can use ShellExecuteEx, letting it do the heavy work, and still use the info returned to call WaitForSingleObject. (At least that's what I'd do, you may have another solution.)

Now, with my workaround (the BAT file) the images are generated correctly and I can see them in my temp directory. But they're not sent, and I can't even see them on my side... The protocol is MSN by the way. If the PNGs are generated shouldn't it be trivial to display them?

Hey thanks for bothering. It is true, that I have problems installing your plugin under Vista 64. I am currently using the 64-bit version of ImageMagick and the MiKTeX 2.7 package for the latex.exe.

I didn't know that there is a 64bit version of Pidgin? Where can I find it?

So I installed ImageMagick, set a symlink (C:\miktexbin\latex.exe) to the latex.exe-Directory (due to blanks in the path) and configured the plugin.

I either got an error like "PNG output not found" or Pidgin crashed without any error message.

well, I must agree on your first paragraph, I see no other reason ...

About pidgin latex plugin, I don't use MikTex, so I don't know the problem , but if it can not find the png, it means that :

1. imagemagick is not well installed
2. imagemagick is not well configured
3. the imagemagick command line is not correct

Check your temporary directory for .dvi files (to know if the .dvi files gets generated first), and then check the command line options of imagemagick. Maybe the converter of imagemagick is not well installed. Check the pidgin latex plugin page (on this blog) some comments may be usefull.

Weird that it's tied to any fields at all! Almost seems like each of those "exceptions" was added because of lobby pressure and the only way for software developers to have the same rights would be due to pressure from software companies... or something. This stuff gets me irritated to no end.

The reason why I stumbled upon your blog is totally unrelated however... I installed Pidgin LaTeX and I already have the latest version of ImageMagick, and MikTex 2.7. Sticking with the default options and changing the relevant paths, I get a "output png not found" error. If I point it towards a folder that doesn't even have latex, it will output the same error -- so it's probably not recognizing MikTex as a valid Latex converter. I don't want to download and install the 600MB+ full Latex build on top of all the junk I already have (and need) such as MikTex, so I'd like to use MikTex instead. Supposedly it's not that different from Latex. Any chance of solving this?
